V is for Vanilla Slice!

I have been thinking about one of these all day! As many of you know, I am allergic to chocolate and do not really enjoy sweet things but when I do decide to have a treat it has to be one of these. The true name is a Vanilla Slice but in my book it has to be made from proper custard, Birds, the type I had as a child. Many vanilla slices are made of confectioner's cream - not a patch on the traditional custard in my opinion!
I have good days and bad days with the Shingles - and the house progress gets me down - I am helpless, so as a treat I made myself a small bowl of custard and ate the lot! Awesome!
Comfort food favourite.....what's yours?

  1. Oh shingles, - so painful, Denise. I'm glad you had some comforting custard - I am a Bird fan too and always happy to see it on the grocer's shelves. Take care, - hope you will soon feel better.

  2. So sorry about the shingles.

My comfort food is tea and toast [with marmite or marmalade or peanut butter]

Hope the Rayburn doing its stuff now. And my [ex]engineer husband enjoys that sort of task too. I was always amazed he didnt dismantle our babies to see how they worked!!

  3. I can have chocolate but I don't really care for it. I love custards, Creme Carmel, Lemon Bars yum !
OK you must tell me more about the Vanilla Slice.... I need one now !
    It looks so good.
I have been known to make a bowl of Birds Custard for a treat too !
I understand what you are going through right now. When I was 17 got Valley Fever (auto-immune)then arthritis and next fibromyalgia. I have the markers for lupus so I understand your pain.
For me stress can be a huge factor and of course sleep.
I hope you will be feeling better soon...

    cheers, parsnip

  5. One of my favourites with flakey pastry. And when you takes a bites, the custard should ooze out of the sides, all over your fingers!

  6. Not fair my juices are flowing.
I am trying to stay off ice cream and have watched a few pounds come off, but there is a doughnut in the kitchen that seems to be calling out to me. I may have to give in!!
So sorry about your shingles. Maybe the flare up will get better once your remod. is done.

  7. I wish I could reach into my computer to take a piece. :)

  8. Yummy custard slice, you know I got a sweet tooth Denise,my comfort food is old fashioned puddings like grandma used to make with custard, but gotta think of the calories in em!!! Love Jill xx

  9. One of my favourites, well actually anything custard.
Hope your nerve ends calm down, and wishing you shut of shingles.

  10. So sorry about your shingles. Sometimes our bodies have ways to slow us down whether we like it or not. At first I thought your treat was a lemon bar. I love those. Best of all I love cream slices! But I have put on 5 1bs in the last month. I'm so disgusted. I had lost 30 lbs over the previous 6 months. I have to give up cream altogether I suppose. I've been getting my fresh fruit from the blender with fresh frozen fruit -- delicious. But then I hit on the idea of adding a dash of evaporated milk, which gradually became more than a dash! Oh well! Back to the drawing board.

  11. had shingles when I gave birth to ds, so know your pain.......haven't had a vanilla slice in years, could eat a bowl of custard also right now,

  12. I thought that picture was of a lemon square, which I love, but I also like carrot cake with cream cheese icing! My all-time favourite food is mac & cheese, but the way my Mom used to make it, which is how I do it now, too. Smothered in ketchup, too! Yummy! And at this time of year, I'm a sucker for shortbread cookies. Hope you're feeling better over the next while so Christmas will be pleasant for you. Hugs!

  13. I'm glad that you were able to make yourself a treat—and eat it all. Do feel better soon.

  14. I am no sweet tooth but there are certain sweet treat that I like. That looks delicious!
Please come and see the Voyage of the Mermaid. Happy holidays!

  15. I remember when Birds was local to me but like everything these days they moved. Birds custard is the ONLY custard. I hope you're able to shake off the shingles pretty soon.

  16. I am not a "sweet" person either, but I prefer chocolate taste to Vanilla, lol !

  17. Just reading about vanilla slice made me drool. This sounds delish! Thanks for the visit!

    Take A Break

  19. mmmm.... my mouth is watering!

  20. It looks delicious. I just had a first slice of Lemon Baked Ricotta Cheesecake. Amazing stuff. Not very sweet but interesting. Hope you ditch the shingles in record time. Take care.

  21. It looks yummy. My favorite comfort foods are potato soup and banana pudding. Depends on if I want sweet or not. My grandma used to make the best homemade pudding. I wish I had her recipe. Have you had the shingles vaccination? We were just talking about it in the office yesterday. I didn't even know you could get one. I hope you feel better soon. From what I hear shingles is terribly painful.

  22. Banana and Marmite sandwiches are good. When I was little my mother would make cornflour for me - it was lovely.
Take it easy and don't try to run before you can walk. Shingles takes its time.
