It's Cold!

Up the lane, yesterday (Sunday)

With so much going on over Christmas and New Year we were fortunate that the family managed to get together for Christmas Dinner at our house. At one point we were worried about the snow but all was okay and we had a great day together. We thought, like many others that the splattering of snow we had would be the last of the bad weather, how wrong we were!

Fortunately we have a 4x4 and manage where we can, Jon does the driving because he has done off-roading in the past and enjoys the challenge, I on the other hand lack such confidence and am quite happy to be a passenger. I did have a road accident many years ago when travelling to school. I hit a patch of black ice on what is a notoriously sharp bend in the village and my car ended up through a fence in a field. Every time we have snow the same thing happens to many motorists, only yesterday we spotted a car in the same position. We went for a drive up to Danby Beacon, the highest spot on the North York Moors, it is only a short drive away.

We saw a few grouse surfacing from the shelter of the grounds. It was very bleak and we were one of the few 4x4 vehicles we saw.

The roads were barely visible and we returned home to keep warm and safe. We have had many garden visitors including some thrushes. I think they are mistlethrushes...any thoughts?

So back to normal now but more snow is forecast so we will be just keeping an eye on the sky. I am quite happy to stay at home!

  1. I hate snow!

I'm thankful I don't have to drive to work any more now I'm retired but there are places I need to go and I'm just terrified of driving in the snow. :(

Happy New Year to you Mrs N. x

  2. Happy New Year to you all Denise. I have been trying to add your new site to my blog list for weeks = have finally managed it today. Was just thinking about you when I saw you had visited my blog.
Yes - we have a lot of snow too - it looks pretty bleak over your way. I try not to drive in it as our lane is virtually impossible to get up at present, so David takes me around (he is happy to do it as there is no work to do on the farm in this weather, other than saw logs, which he is doing at present).
Do wish you would call and see us.

  3. All our snow was gone by Chrsitmas day here in Bucks. We can normally get about OK down here, but the side roads are not gritted and my son slid his car into a neighbours....

  5. Snow always looks pretty from the inside out, but not from the outside in. I much prefer to cosy up inside with a book, a fire, and a nice warm toddy. Stay warm, Denise! It's pouring rain here today. yuk!

  6. Brrr! Glorious pics especially the grouse, and it's a song thrush. We have lots of redwings, and skeins of geese on the lakes at present. Fed up with slithering about on the farm though, but it beats having to drive to work!!
And then there's always crumpets toated on the fire.....
Healthy & Happy New Year to you and yours.

  8. Snow is quite the "thing" at the moment it seems. We here on the coast usually don't get much of it, but this year seems to be different. We are getting close to 50 cm. I hope the gees and hens can stand it!

    Happy New Year!

PS So you are going to Denmark? Legoland is a nice place to spend some money :-)

  10. pretty orrible snow down here and it doesn't look like it'll get any better this week. You seem to do OK with your 4x4 and more prepared for it than most of us.

  13. UGH! I bet that wind was whistling over the moors! Nice to look at but not to be in. We have had 3 weeks of 70 degrees weather and my sister is coming down from Canada a week today. What's the betting it will be cold and windy by the time she gets here.
