C is for Containers...and Chickens.

The chickens quite like the odd flower - red in particular, so my containers are all off the ground.
Last week I spotted this hanging begonia basket for £5. I take my MIL shopping on a Friday - she likes to go to Asda. The plants and shrubs they sell outside are always very dry - some half dead by the end of the week, so I took pity on this one and decided to give it a new home. I have plans.

Many years ago Jon bought me 3 chimney pots. At the moment they contain Ivy but I am considering using them in plant beds and amongst the shrubs.

Hanging baskets 2 & 3. I did these myself

Appropriately Sadie was eating a courgette whilst I was pottering in the garden.

My rosemary is well and truly active. I have recently planted a herb collection but added some geraniums and gerbas.

As ever the chickens were clucking away in the henhouse - Both Olwyn & Mabel decided to lay an egg! lol!

Week C in my ABC contribution. Making my garden tasks achievable.

  1. Your garden and artefacts sure are taking shape Denise, I rather like the wicker hanging baskets, I've given up on hanging baskets as they're so difficult to maintain. Sadie certainly has settled into The Nesbitt household, eating a courgette too. Probably better for her than a mingy old bone that's been dug up out of your garden. Glad the egg supply is provident!
    love Di..xx

    1. I like the wicker baskets too Di - so much nicer to look at compared with the wire type. I am making great moves with my Asda begonias - watch this space!

    1. It's one of those pop up garden waste collectors Leslie - I store the wood shavings in there so it's an ideal place to lay eggs - I believe! lol!

    1. Ellen - yes it is though our egg yield is a bit low at the moment. However I did notice Bev was late out the henhouse this morning - she may have decided to start laying again. Her chosen place of preference is behind the container, in the corner of the henhouse.

  9. I am at the point in the midst of this hot summer where I have to replace the spring pansies in my pots with something more durable, but I'm waiting for a rainy time to do it....

  10. Chickens are a bit like cats, always inquisitive but, especially when they think you might have food in your hand!
I had a large chimney pot once at one of the places I lived but, it succumbed to a heavy frost and disintegrated. I grew a 'lasagne' of plants in there as is the fashion to call multi-layering of plants and bulbs these days. It was opposite the kitchen window and had interest all year-round and even a Robin nesting in it one year!
You are making great headway into your plans, well done, come and sort mine out next? lol!

    1. Sandie - chickens are hilarious in the garden - I am sure I would get much more done if I didn't watch them so much.

  13. Because of where I live I do a lot of container gardening, but mine aren't as lovely as yours. If a 55-gallon plastic barrel finds its way to out doorstep it gets cut in half to make two nice sized barrels for growing things like potatoes. - Margy

  15. What whimsy! Chickens and herbs and chimney pots (the last one I had never seen before!). A sweet little trip through your day, Denise. Thanks for creating ABC and working so hard on it all these years.

I am Death Incarnate to practically every living plant, but I'm trying to NOT kill a couple of potted plants, and so far, it's a whole month and they are looking good. I so admire those who are good with plants! Peace, Amy
