G is for Goals!

“I can't change the direction of the wind,
but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Jimmy Dean

Sometimes I find myself getting caught up in matters and schemes and before I know it I am feeling pressurised and a feeling of failure creeps in....only slowly and in a small way but either way it gnaws away at me leaving a negative taste in me.
A few months ago I was thinking about New Year's Resolutions - whether it was something I had eaten or a knock on the head I don't know what it was but I felt I wanted to develop my sewing skill (s). I suspect the main reason was it was during the winter months and I had been impressed by the many bloggers who can do wonders with a needle and thread and foolishly I felt inadequate when I considered what I could achieve.
I set myself a task of making something every month. Last month I made a cushion, which believe it or not is still being used.
I was only thinking the other day, that whilst I may not sew I can design and produce cards and stationery. Still a creative outlet for my thinking and ideas and I am ALWAYS making something - there is ALWAYS something in the pipeline. Only yesterday I produced the wedding invitations above for a current commission and after getting fabulous responses from the bride and groom today I will produce another 60! This is normal for me - so I do feel this is adequate and acceptable for a target and certainly an achievement.
So yes - I will adjust my sails and carry on!
Watch this space!

  1. Thank you for yet another fabulous Friday quote to discuss with my year sixes! I love the idea of making something a month - very achievable .... Keep adjusting those sails xx

  2. Your stationery is fabulous, I checked out the website the other day. I think you have enough on your plate with that without 'giving yourself other tasks'. You need to enjoy each thing you do without putting pressure on yourself.

  3. Loving the wedding invitations Denise. As for the sewing, it's a hobby right, so just do it as and when the mood takes you. x

  4. I do not have an artistic bone in my body...I'll adjust my sails and head back to shore!!
    Jane x
    Your cards are BEAUTIFUL.

  5. The quote is wonderful.
The Wedding Invitation is lovely, how are they mailed ? Padded envelope ?
When I designed my cards I always take that into consideration.
    I checked out your web-site, Fabulous !

    cheers, parsnip

  6. I love that quote and the invitations. Beautiful! Glad to see you're reaching your goals.

  7. I am glad you can adjust your sails.
When you can do that you just grow onward and upward.
Your invitations are lovely. I can see why they are loved.
Keep up the great work Denise.

  8. That's a GREAT motto!

  9. Those invitations are so lovely - I'm impressed with your talent!

  11. The wedding invitation is beautiful! Definitely do not beat yourself up because sewing is not your calling. :)

  12. Good for you, Denise. We can bat ourselves over the head with the word "should" because we think we "should" be able to do what other people do. How many people can do what you do?
Everyone is different. My husband is a whiz at math. I can't add, subtract or multiply. But today I was drawing up plans for our kitchen reno (yes, we're still at the planning stage) and he can't visualize a room from the floor plan. But he isn't going to make himself draw floor plans, and I'm not going to make myself balance a budget.
I love the quotation from Jimmy Dean. It's perfect.

  13. Beautiful card, - the rose is fabulous. I think you are on the right track and I'm sure you reach your goals all the time, Denise!!!

  14. I like the quote because it implies destinations CAN be reached regardless of the difficulties getting there. Also, think your invitation card is awesome and rather unique. It has me wondering about the rose buds. They look so real but I imagine they must be artificial for mailing purposes. What a clever idea!

    1. Not articial Penelope - dried and pressed from a lady I know well. Dxx

  15. I think it's great all the things you're doing craft-wise. I'd love to find out if you have to have a business license and pay tax and all for what you sell. I'm thinking of doing a photo card "cottage business" and need all the help I can get to get started.

  16. Wonderful post. I know that creeping failure feeling all too well...going back to grad school in your mid 40s gives rise to the feeling on a regular basis! lol Is always good to celebrate achievements big and small. I am seriously impressed with your wedding invitations, they are gorgeous and so creative!! Definitely something to be proud of.

  17. PS - your header photo is stunning!!!

  18. The stationary is lovely. Your sails are set in the right direction. Carry on.

  19. I love how your friend has dried the rose, how lovely it will be to receive (and keep) such an individual invitation like yours. Keep on sailing Denise who knows what you will come up with next.

  20. Denise I would say that no adjustment is required to your sails - wow great wedding cards - enjoy your week - Jane UK

  21. Absolutely, you are busy and creative enough in your own way without having to load yourself with more.

  22. What beautifully designed wedding stationery.

  23. Interesting that Shooting Parrots' current post is No regrets (in French).

  24. Great Goals- Hope you have great going and have gala time-

  25. Hello.
    Nice quote.
The wedding invitations are lovely. Beautiful keepsake.
Thanks for sharing. I'd better get a move on with my post for next week. See you then!

  26. very nice talent you have here. at first i thought the rose is real :) really cute and elegant art work. visiting from abc wednesday.

  27. Well now, why do you measure yourself up against others, who are doing totally different things? Oh ... wait! I know that song! I sing it myself. LOL!

You are talented enough, as demonstrated by your stationary business - you only have to look at what you posted up there. But kudos to you for stretching yourself and taking on a challenge. A cushion is a great start, but where's the picture?

Thank you for your comments, always nice to know somebody has taken the time to let me know what they think.
