V is for Vanilla Slice!

I have been thinking about one of these all day! As many of you know, I am allergic to chocolate and do not really enjoy sweet things but when I do decide to have a treat it has to be one of these. The true name is a Vanilla Slice but in my book it has to be made from proper custard, Birds, the type I had as a child. Many vanilla slices are made of confectioner's cream - not a patch on the traditional custard in my opinion!
I have good days and bad days with the Shingles - and the house progress gets me down - I am helpless, so as a treat I made myself a small bowl of custard and ate the lot! Awesome!
Comfort food favourite.....what's yours?

  1. Oh shingles, - so painful, Denise. I'm glad you had some comforting custard - I am a Bird fan too and always happy to see it on the grocer's shelves. Take care, - hope you will soon feel better.

  10. So sorry about your shingles. Sometimes our bodies have ways to slow us down whether we like it or not. At first I thought your treat was a lemon bar. I love those. Best of all I love cream slices! But I have put on 5 1bs in the last month. I'm so disgusted. I had lost 30 lbs over the previous 6 months. I have to give up cream altogether I suppose. I've been getting my fresh fruit from the blender with fresh frozen fruit -- delicious. But then I hit on the idea of adding a dash of evaporated milk, which gradually became more than a dash! Oh well! Back to the drawing board.

  12. I thought that picture was of a lemon square, which I love, but I also like carrot cake with cream cheese icing! My all-time favourite food is mac & cheese, but the way my Mom used to make it, which is how I do it now, too. Smothered in ketchup, too! Yummy! And at this time of year, I'm a sucker for shortbread cookies. Hope you're feeling better over the next while so Christmas will be pleasant for you. Hugs!

  15. I remember when Birds was local to me but like everything these days they moved. Birds custard is the ONLY custard. I hope you're able to shake off the shingles pretty soon.

  21. It looks yummy. My favorite comfort foods are potato soup and banana pudding. Depends on if I want sweet or not. My grandma used to make the best homemade pudding. I wish I had her recipe. Have you had the shingles vaccination? We were just talking about it in the office yesterday. I didn't even know you could get one. I hope you feel better soon. From what I hear shingles is terribly painful.

  22. Banana and Marmite sandwiches are good. When I was little my mother would make cornflour for me - it was lovely.
Take it easy and don't try to run before you can walk. Shingles takes its time.
