Escape!
I love holidays! The preparation, anticipation, change of scenery and daily routines! I think my favourite part of our holiday to the Isle of Man must be the Friday we leave. Early start...and a lovely trundle over the yorkshire moors and dales to arrive at the port...Heysham. The ferry crossing - where we ALWAYS are taken in with the breeze, forgetting the sun's rays penetrate.....(so midweek we both have sunburn) the journey to Port Erin and the lovely break we enjoy in the hotel.
We spent a couple of days away from the racing due to bad weather - quite by chance I came across the novels of Rebecca Shaw and I have not been able to put them down since I arrived home. To date I have read about 15!!!! Yes I am a speed reader and HAVE to finish a book in a day - today however I read 2! Put it down to the weather!
The books are based on village life and I would urge anybody familiar with such a setting to read at least one. The first one to read is the above. This sets the scene!
I have one more to read then I have read the entire collection - a new novel, in the village series is due in August - I will be placing my order with the mobile library tomorrow.
SO- any suggestions for a good read?

Whenever I read about a simple, beautiful vacation (or holiday, as you'd say :-)), my traveling urge kicks in. The reading might be the best part, of course :-)
ReplyDeleteI've recently finished "The Thorn Birds" ... I've read it many times, but it seems different each time (or maybe I am different each time).
Oh, your holiday sounds lovely! A book I loved was "Watership Down" by Richard Adams. I just found your blog and became a follower (: Can't wait to come back for more posts! Hope you have a lovely week!!

If you enjoy murder mysteries a la Prime Suspect, Lynda LaPlante has written a series that is amazing! She's British and wrote the scripts for the Prime Suspect TV series starring Helen Mirren. The first book is called "Blind Fury."
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh when I saw the cover. I ordered the first three books of the series last week and have been waiting for them to arrive. I can't remember where I saw the recommendation now, but they sound relaxing.
ReplyDeleteI took an old favorite off the shelf today - one of D.E. Stevenson's. These are like comfort food for my brain. I've read them so many times over the years that there are no surprises; it's more like touching base with old friends.
I haven't heard of this writer. I shall look out for her now [she's another ex teacher, I notice!]
ReplyDeleteI just read my second Muriel Spark - forty years after my first one - and wish I hadn't left such a long gap! now hunting out more MS.
Intrigued too by the mention of DE Stevenson above. Not heard of her either!
So many books, so little time to read them... blessings x
Fifteen of them? I suppose that's a great way to have spent the last few rainy weeks :)
ReplyDelete500 Mile Walkies by Mark Wallington. A great read and laugh with dog and man!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed your hol. Lv MrsGH.
Love the TT! Visited as a child many years ago, I can still vaguely remember the ferry journey, I hope to take my lad one day....Glad you had a lovely hol.
ReplyDeleteMy holidays always start as soon as I shut the front door and walk down the path! I speed read too, I can quite easily read a book in a day - well as long as I don't do anything but read. ;)
ReplyDeleteR.F . Delderfield "The Avenue Goes to War" series is one of my favourites.

I'm always looking for new books to read and this sounds like something I might enjoy.

I am not a Rebecca Shaw fan Denise, so we obviously like different books.
ReplyDeleteIf I find an author I love though then I must read everything I can find.
Mainly I like travel books. I do agree about the first day of the holiday - we always feel on holiday the moment we shut the farm gate and start up the road.
I also love the excitement of preparing for a holiday. I know Heysham well and have sailed to the Isle of Man as foot passengers for a few days holiday. No way could I read 2 books in one day - I read 2 - 3 a month!
ReplyDeleteMy problem is that details of a plot evaporate after only a few days. So I read for immediate pleasure and the lingering feeling it leaves.
ReplyDeleteReading books is one of my favorite thing too, my bookshelves is contains Steel, Sparks, Tolkien, Mitch Albom, Sheldon, Grisham, books about economy/investing and a lot more. A rainy weather indeed is a perfect time to read. ~ Ed Butowsky
ReplyDeleteI've just finished "Cutting for Stone" Abraham Verghese’s first novel. I really enjoyed it so can highly recommend it to you.
ReplyDeleteCheers
