I is for Incidental timings!

So - there we were on the ferry! Now I don't mind the ferry crossing because I put myself into a place of gay abandonment - after a nice meal, a bottle of wine I settled down for the night.......
Now dear Jon KNOWS I am a light sleeper and after 23 years of marriage knows it is unwise to wake me unecessarily......so when the cabin light came on I awoke immediately.
Jon, eyes like saucers was informing me the ferry was turning round - infact it had been for a while and he was convinced we were moving in a circle!
The captain made an announcement "Ladies and Gentlemen we are making a detour as a female passenger has left the ship and is in the water!"
Jon went outside to see what was going on and witnessed the rescue.

See the amazing footage from the RAF here.

Amazingly the girl survived!

The holiday was fantastic and I will share our adventure later as we only returned yesterday and the kitchen is back on.
Whilst we were in France we were aware that a hurricane was due for the |North East Coast the day we were returning on the ferry! Needless to say I managed to get myself in a state - a quiet state, just keeping my worries to myself. I must admit when Jon pointed out he had noticed the ship's name had been re-painted, this being bad luck did not really help. Then he pointed out the lower the deck the better or smoother a crossing would be - so to be on deck 1 or 2 was best....we were on deck 9!!! Prone to a bouncy crossing!!
My fears were in vain - the crossing was very smooth.
We left the ferry around 10am Monday and then came the motorbike ride home - in the wind!
I can honestly say it was one of the most frightening moments in my life! I could feel the bike being buffeted by the wind, and held on for dear life.
When we finally pulled up outside the front gates I felt a pope moment coming on - all I wanted to do was kiss the ground!
Home safe and sound!
Phew!

  6. Oh my goodness, Denise. What an adventure. That poor woman. It isn't easy to "fall" off a ferry.
I watched the video. They sure have that rescue thing down pat, and a good thing they do, too.

  13. I watched the RAF video you linked. Lucky girl to have survived and kudos to those who had a hand in her rescue. What would we do without those kind and dedicated people? I'm glad you had a good 'rest of the trip". xo

  14. One lucky lady; and there you were ready to use the Ijmuiden destination for ABC, possibly.

  15. Carol snagged my line - that must have been a HORRIFYING experience for that girl. Now I'm wondering when the guy threw her the buoy...was he with her when she "fell?" Did he push her? Details, girl! I want details! lol I'm just glad you're home safe and sound. I did the overnight ferry from Naples to Palermo once and it was awful...inside cabin, noisy, and I could hear what sounded like chains clanking. All I could think was "what if this thing sinks?" Never again!

  19. This was quite a story. One just never know what to expect when reading the daily blogs, but of course you didn't ever expect to be on a ferry making such news either. Thankfully the girl was rescued.

  27. Wow, I saw that on the news as well. The poor girl was quoted as saying she thought it was all over.

I imagine that must have been quite emotional.

  29. Brrrr... I get goosebumps just thinking about spending time in that cold water...! Amazing rescue footage. Let us know if they find out how she ended up going overboard. Hope she wasn't trying planking on the railing!

  30. Found you at ABC Weds. What a story! Thirty minutes under water and she survived. That rescue crew ROCKS. Glad you had a good trip, as a different end to her story would definitely altered yours. Amy

  32. Glad you got home safely in spite of the wind. I wonder what the wind was like at Flamborough! As for the rescue -- I have nothing but sheer admiration for these teams. I have seen them in practice and for real. They're the best there is.
