Autumn

Leaves
by Elsie N. Brady

How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow.

It's tidy up time in the garden and the vast piles of leaves need to be sorted and mulched and added to the compost. Remaining apples need picking and the exploding conkers need collecting. The colous in the garden are so autumnal and I really feel that we are getting ready for winter. Last night the clocks went back - and whilst it was nice to have an extra hour in bed this morning - the nights will be drawing in. Normally the hens go to bed around 6pm when it starts to get dark, but tonight I think they will be going earlier. The mornings are cold and they seem to enjoy their breakfast of porridge, layers pellets and grit - good to keep the gals happy!

Congratulations to Julie my neighbour picked your number out yesterday from my comments re my previous post.

  1. When the clocks go back there's no denying that winter is coming. Sunset comes too early - well, it won't noticeably come at all here today as it's raining!
Word verification is 'acackle' - very appropriate for the date, don't you think?

  2. Although the colours of Autumn are beautiful I much prefer summer. The extra hour in bed this morning was most welcome, especially after a late night. ;)

Very dull and foggy here - best place is indoors keeping warm!

  4. What a lovely vibrant picture, it would make a nice post card or wrapping paper for sure. When I was younger the dark nights and winter months were my favorite time of year but now the dark days seem to go on much to long for my liking. Happy halloween MRS...

  5. Love the pic and poem, they show the season well.
Our clocks are still ahead, I think next week they change. I wish they didn't change at all, but no one asked me for my opinion!
    Blessings!

It is dark here - not with night but with heavy damp fog! The hens will be heading for their shed very soon! Just watching the sky now!

  11. I had to get up in the dark today in order to get my car to the garage early. It was dark, windy, and raining! Now I'm home and the weather has let up a bit so I may go for a bit of a walk around the neighbourhood and take some photos of our coloured leaves before they all fall off the trees.

  13. I don't like it when the clocks change and I drive home from work in the dark, but I have enjoyed seeing all the different colours of the trees. This year they seem to be brighter than usual, probably the fine weather we have been lucky to get.
